Kickball Rules

Teams:  registered teams can have up to 30 people, but we only distribute 15 shirts.  If you want more than that, there is an additional cost.  If you want a logo on the shirt, we can do that also for an additional cost.  In order to avoid a forfeit, a team must have a minimum of 8 players (2 females) present to begin the game.  If a team has 9 or more players, there must be a minimum of 3 females on the field at all times.  If you don't have enough females you must play short and will get an automatic out when that position is reached in the batting order.

Field Dimensions:  the kickball diamond is a square with equal sides of 60 feet played on a softball or grass field with distance from home plate to second base, and from first base to third base is 84 feet 10 1/4 inches. The pitching mound is in the center of the diamond, 42 feet 5 1/8 inches from home plate, and directly aligned with the 1st base/3rd base diagonal, also called the Encroachment Line.  Men need to kick the ball past the Encroachment Line, or it is a foul ball.  There is an additional line 10 feet from homeplate called the Bunt Line.  Women need to kick it past this line or it is a foul ball.  The ball must roll dead for it to be called a Foul Ball.  If the fielder picks the ball up while it is still moving, the play is live.

Strike zone:  it extends to 1 foot on either side of home plate, and 1 foot high. There will be a box around the plate (1 foot on all sides) which marks the strike zone. If any part of the ball falls within the zone or hits the line (at or before home plate), then it is a strike.

Pitching/Kicking:  pitches must be rolled towards home plate.  Pitches may not be bounced, only rolled towards the kicker.  Pitches that bounce more than one foot above the ground will be considered an illegal pitch, and thus deemed a ball.  All kicks must be made by foot and must occur at or behind the line one foot in front of home plate.  If the kicker does contact the ball in front of that it will be considered a foul ball and a dead ball.  The pitcher and fielders must stay behind the pitcher's mound (Encroachment Line) until the ball is kicked.  The catcher or kicker is not allowed to cross the line one foot in front of home plate until the ball is contacted.

Defense:  teams can have a maximum of 10 players in the field, with no more than 7 men.  This includes the catcher.

Lineup:  batting order will have no more than 3 men kicking in a row.  Teams may bat more than 10 batters.  However, for any additional players who wish to bat, the lineup must follow the same 3 men rule. A woman may kick twice in order to accommodate this.  Once every player bats, you may start again at the top of your lineup.  In playoffs, teams will submit a line-up to the umpire to eliminate any batting order discrepancies.

The Count:  players will have a 1 ball/1 strike count on them when they come up to kick.  The batter is out after the 3rd strike, including a foul ball that is hit after the 2nd strike.

Game Time:  all games will have a 45 minute time-limit or a maximum of 7 innings (whichever comes first).  All play will stop 45 minutes from the time games begin.  An official game is 4 innings (3.5 if the home team leads).  No new innings will be started when the game time reaches 40 minutes.

Injured Runner:   injured players may receive a pinch runner once they have reached 1st base.  If the injury occurs after the runner reaches a bag safely, the pinch runner can be used.  The last player out of the proceeding inning will become the pinch runner (girl for girl and guy for guy).

Mercy Rule:  10 run lead after 5 innings.

Leads/Steals:  NO LEADS OR STEALING.  Runners can leave the base once the ball crosses the plane of the plate or is hit by the batter.  If a runner leaves early, the ball is dead and the runner is declared out.  If this is the 3rd out of the inning the batter will be first up in the next inning.

Outfield Play:  outfielders must start play 10 yards past the infield at the start of a play. If the outfielder runs in to make a play, it is a legal play.

Forfeit Rule:  10 minutes after game time. If one team has less than the minimum number of players (8 total - 2 females) at ten past the designated start time, it is up to the staff and opposing team as to what is allowable.  This decision will ultimately be made by the staff.

Players on Multiple Teams:  be aware that if you have players that play on multiple teams in the same league (same division) during the playoffs, you must choose on which team you want to play.  If that team loses you may not play for the other team.

Outs:  players are considered out by one of the following means: (1) Striking out, (2) A fly ball caught by the defense, (3) A throw out at one of the lead bases, (4) The runner being tagged by the ball, (5) Any runner who slaps or grabs the ball from the defensive player, (6) A foul out, or (7) A runner being struck by a thrown ball below the head while attempting to advance or return to a base.
